Overview
Retain the machining surface
An as-machined finish leaves the surface produced by the cutting operation. Visible tool marks and differences between machined faces may remain. It can be appropriate when the part's function does not require an additional coating or decorative treatment.
Define what still needs control
As-machined does not remove the need to specify critical roughness, edge breaks or burr removal. Identify functional contact surfaces, sealing faces and any dimensions that have a separate acceptance requirement.
Consider the working environment
The base material determines much of the untreated surface's behavior. If corrosion protection, wear resistance or a controlled cosmetic appearance is required, review an additional finishing route with the material and drawing.
